Topic: The Gift Planning New Year

Malcolm Burrows, Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Scotia Wealth Management

In 2023 the world of gift planning is facing a remarkable series of opportunities and challenges.  Malcolm will share his annual report on some of the biggest issues in philanthropy.  This year the list includes mega gifts, rethinking endowments, new DQ rules, life income gifts, AI, rise of foundations, new types of charitable recipients, and estate donations.  Buckle up: it’s going to be an exciting year.

Bio:

malcolm_burrows.jpgMalcolm is a philanthropic advisor and gift planner with 32 years of experience. He is Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services at Scotia Wealth Management.  He founded and leads Aqueduct Foundation, a public foundation with donor advised funds. He is also head of Scotia Wealth Management’s 100-year-old private foundation services practice.  He worked for three major Toronto charities from 1990 to 2004.

Malcolm is an active educator, writer, and volunteer in the charitable sector. Through the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, he has contributed to the development of new charitable tax incentives, including the elimination of capital gains on gifts of public securities and the “estate donation” rules.  His proposal for gifts of private securities and taxable real estate published by C.D. Howe Institute was included in the 2015 Federal Budget.  He was CAGP’s course director from 1999 to 2011.

In his volunteer life, he is a director of the Muttart Foundation and Canada Helps, and a member of the Indigenous and Canadian Curatorial Committee at the Art Gallery of Ontario.  Previously, he served on CRA’s Charities Directorate Technical Issues Working Group, was Co-Editor of The Philanthropist, and a board member of both the Canadian and Spanish sections of Doctors Without Borders.

        

Topic: Intergenerational Philanthropy

Janice Benatar, Vice President, Philanthropic Leadership for UJA Federation of Greater Toronto
Sarah Brown, Al G. Brown and Associates

On the cusp of the largest transfer of wealth in modern history, this session will identify the urgency of having multi-generational philanthropic conversations. 

The session will be enhanced by a four-generation case study, as well as a participatory hands-on tool.  Added value will be in discussing the synergy between professional fundraisers and Financial/Wealth Advisors.

Bio:

janice_benatar.jpgJanice Benatar, CFRE was born Harare, Zimbabwe.  She has lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Israel, and now makes her home in Toronto.  Her passion for building bridges between people inspired Janice to seek a career in fundraising, where she could engage philanthropists with a focus on tangible, positive change. 

Janice has been working as a fundraiser for over 20 years.  She has been involved in a number of fundraising initiatives, including endowment, planned giving, capital and special campaigns, annual giving and working strategically with professional advisors.

Designations include CFRE (Certified Fund-Raising Executive), LLQP (Life License Qualification Program) and MFA-P (Master Financial Advisor-Philanthropy). 

Janice is Vice President, Philanthropic Leadership for UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.
Specializing in integrated philanthropy, she engages, educates and motivates philanthropists to consider a variety of meaningful ways to fulfill their strategic philanthropic goals.  

sarah_brown.jpgAl G. Brown and Associates is an independent financial planning, estate planning and insurance firm located in midtown Toronto.  In her role, Sarah is responsible for all aspects of the client experience as well as marketing and communications.

Since joining the firm in 2011, she has worked in many client relations capacities, supporting the company’s mandate to help individuals and families use their wealth to fulfil the purposes they value most.

Sarah is passionate about helping clients fulfill their philanthropic goals. She is a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto and a member of the Professional Advisory Committee for the Jewish National Fund. Sarah is married to Steven and they have three children: Raizy, Elijah and David.

 

Topic: Launch It or Leave It: Navigating A Legacy Challenge Campaign

Richard Lefebvre, Associate Director, Individual and Legacy Giving with The National Ballet of Canada

This session will share strategies and learnings from a major cultural institution, The National Ballet of Canada, on their successful completion of the 70 for 70 Legacy Challenge campaign.

This session will cover how leveraging a legacy challenge can meet multiple fundraising goals and strategies, including revitalizing a legacy giving program, galvanizing donor participation, unearthing existing legacy donors, and more...

richard_lefebvre.jpgHaving formally trained as a dancer at Canada’s National Ballet School, Richard decided to combine his passion for arts, business, and community involvement leading to a successful career as a professional fundraiser. Richard is currently the Associate Director, Individual and Legacy Giving with The National Ballet of Canada, and is a part-time faculty member at Centennial College, teaching Fundraising, Financial Management, Grants and Government Relations in the Arts Management Program. 

 

 

 

Topic: It’s raining leads! How to collaborate and integrate with your annual giving team to grow your planned giving prospect list and get more time back

It’s the classic planned giving paradox – how can you create a prospect list if you are busy asking for planned gifts, and how can you ask for planned gifts if you don’t have a prospect list? Whether planned giving is a focus for your organization or if it is simply off the side of your desk, this paradox is common amongst us all. Join Laura Champion and Denise Fernandes to learn how to integrate planned giving with annual giving to generate more leads, buy back more time, and build a better program. This session will be a combination of lead generation strategies and relationship building techniques that will help you break down silos within your organization and achieve more together.

denise_fernandes.jpgDenise Fernandes began her career in marketing in the private sector but soon realized her passion for fundraising. Denise has been part of the fundraising community for over 15 years and is currently Executive Director of Planned Giving and Major Gifts at Diabetes Canada. She has held various fundraising roles but has focused on major gifts and planned giving at leading organizations like SickKids Foundation, World Vision, and Plan International Canada. 

Denise has a consistent track record of exceeding ambitious fundraising goals, creating new donor opportunities with complex gift strategies and developing high performing teams. She has a passion for enabling strategic philanthropy and breaking down silos for donor-centered fundraising. Her “why” is to build more great fundraising leaders and loves to mentor and learn from those future leaders. Denise has volunteered with CAGP at the chapter level as a mentor and member of the education committee and nationally as a conference programming committee as member and chair.

laura_champion.jpgLaura loves fundraising. After starting her career as a library technician, she enrolled in Humber college to become a professional fundraiser. Since that time, she has built a career that showcases her passion for the art and science of fundraising. With a focus on strategy but an eye to execution, Laura has made it her mission to understand all aspects of the fundraising world. She has a proven track record in uplifting those around her including her founding of the Speaker Discovery Series, ongoing involvement with the Humber Fundraising program and longtime involvement in the AFP education world, Laura knows that we are all in this together. In her spare time, she pours her energy into Do Good Donuts, a start-up employment social enterprise delivering work-based training for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Bio: 

av.jpgAndrew Valentine’s charities and non-profit law practice focuses on providing advice to organizations on issues including gift planning, incorporation and registration, ongoing compliance matters, and audits. Andrew also deals extensively with non-profit corporate governance and corporate structuring issues, advising on corporate restructuring, directors’ duties and liabilities, governance best practices, bylaws and policies, and membership disputes.

She provides general counsel and specialized tax advice to charities and not-for-profit organizations across Canada. She also works with the Private Client Services practice group to uniquely serve clients local to Southwestern Ontario.
