5 Reasons Why Advisors Don't Talk About Philanthropy and What You Can Do About It


You are committed to securing planned gifts for your organization. But planned giving is a team effort; it is a combined effort between you (as the fundraiser) and your donor’s financial advisor. This session will help you understand how you can multiply your efforts and secure more planned gifts by better understanding the relationship between your donors and their financial advisors.

Financial advisors are critical when securing planned gifts but there is a breakdown in communication. 91% of financial advisors believe they are having the philanthropic conversation with their donors but only 13% of donors remember having it! How can we work with financial advisors as allies to better serve our donors?

This session will help you:

  • Discover the history of misunderstanding between the financial services and the non-profit sector.
  • Understand what motivates advisors and why charitable giving may not be in the best interest of the advisor.
  • Learn how to create relationships with key financial advisors, accountants and lawyers that will facilitate discussions about philanthropy.
  • Learn how to identify those professionals that have your donor’s and your charity’s best interest top of mind.
  • Learn 5 questions to ask an allied professional to determine if they are really allies.

lynn_whetham_photo.jpgLynn Whetham is a financial writer, educator, speaker and radio show host. As a professor, she specialized in teaching financial planning, assisting people to create a retirement of their own design. Lynn is passionate about helping individuals discover the tools and knowledge they need to maximize their financial and philanthropic opportunities. As a result, Lynn is able to enhance the lives of the people with whom she works by multiplying their impact on those causes that are most meaningful to them.

Lynn is an expert writer for the publication, Neighbours of West Galt. She has thousands of listeners following her radio show, Mindful Money Management, which is dedicated to empowering socially conscious individuals to manage their financial resources for the benefit of themselves, their families and the greater community.

Lynn’s first book, Retire Abundantly, was published in 2018.

Lynn has served the arts community as a board member of the Kiwanis Boys Choir and, before joining the board of the Grand River Festival, acted as their volunteer co-ordinator. She is currently a Lions Club International member and a past board member of The Bridges, the Cambridge Homeless Shelter.

Lynn has four adult daughters and three grandchildren. She lives on a hobby farm with her husband, Neil, where her favourite pastime is trail riding with her horse, Winchester, and cuddling with her dog, Newton.
