As a founding partner of Bequest Insurance, Jack is a leading expert in integrating insurance into financial, estate and legacy planning. Jack and his wife Marlena McCarthy are co-authors of the only two books written on this topic – Ripple Effect for financial advisors, and Multiplying Generosity for fundraisers. Easy to read, these books to demystify and thoroughly explore using insurance in charitable giving, and show how gifts of insurance allow donors to leave more to their charities, family, and pay less tax.

Jack is a Certified Financial Planner and has worked in the investment industry since 1996. He has worked for Manulife Financial, BMO Nesbitt Burns, Altamira Financial Services and National Bank. As a licensed insurance broker, now Jack works independently with individuals and organizations providing financial, investment, and retirement advice. He is also an estate planning and legacy giving specialist.

Jack can periodically be found on a golf course, tennis court or bowling alley. A former restaurant owner, he now puts his creative culinary talents to good use cooking for Marlena and their friends.

Marlena McCarthy thinks of herself first as a writer, and second as a professional fundraiser. After graduating with a Journalism degree and certificate in public relations, she decided to use her skills for good, and has worked with charities for 35 years in marketing, communications, and fundraising.

As Founding Partner and Fundraising and Communications Director of Bequest Insurance, Marlena is most proud of writing the first comprehensive how-to books on integrating insurance into philanthropy.

Marlena McCarthy also has her own business called Done Write Communications, a boutique agency through which she works as independent fundraising consultant and writer for non-profits specializing in direct mail, mid-level donor programs, legacy giving promotion and donor communications. Since 1999, she has worked with more than 135 different charities and foundations.

Her hidden superpower is singing, and she has a fun and cheeky a cappella quartet called Spadina Station.
