Capital Gains and Gifts of Real Estate/PrivateCo Shares – Pre-election Advocacy

We’re pleased to provide another update on Don Johnson’s continued advocacy efforts for the removal of capital gains tax on charitable donations of private company shares and real estate, and to share his recent letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau, as well as the Finance Minister’s reply to Mr. Johnson.

CAGP was, of course, disappointed that these giving provisions were not included in the 2019 budget, however, the fall Federal election provides another opportunity to raise this issue. Mr. Johnson believes [his] proposal is relevant to the election because there is a very high level of awareness and support of this proposal among all stakeholders in the charitable sector. He further encourages anyone interested in this proposal to meet with their local MP to communicate the importance of this proposal to residents in their riding, or to discuss this with candidates from all parties in their riding.
