Estate Planning - Working with Wills and Charitable Gifts

This presentation will feature three different perspectives on wills and charitable giving. On the panel will be a lawyer, an accountant and a gift planning consultant.

The Panel

Andrew Torbiak is a partner with Tradition Law LLP, a well-reputed boutique law firm in Winnipeg specializing in all aspects of estate and trust law. He has received his call to the bar in both Manitoba and Alberta. Andrew practices mainly in estate planning and estate administration work, and also provides consultation to clients on a wide array of issues including private committeeship, estate beneficiary status, and attorneyship. Outside of his practice Andrew is a sessional instructor and coach in Legal Negotiations at the Faculty of Law at the U of M. Lastly, Andrew is working toward his TEP designation from the Society of Trust and Estate Planners, and with any luck will have completed his studies by the time he retires in 30 years.

Brad Klassen adds decades of experience, sophisticated tax knowledge in both consulting and tax preparation to Fort Group. He earned his CA designation in 1988, completed CPA Canada's In-Depth Tax program in 1991 and has been continuously serving clients and providing tax advice to both private business and not-for-profits on both a local and global scale. Joining the company as a partner in 2021, after 27 years at a major Canadian accounting firm, Brad has taught tax coursers for  CPA Manitoba, has served as a tutor for the national In-Depth Tax program and continues to lead development courses for CPA Manitoba in taxation.

Throughout his career Brad has primarily serviced small to medium-sized businesses across all industries, and specializes in structuring transactions in a tax-efficient manner including: mergers and aquisitions, estate planning, and reorganizations.

Known for his dedication to volunteering in his community, Brad currently serves as secretary-treasurer of the Executive Commitee, and chair of the Finance and Stewardship Committee for Concordia Hospital. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Concordia Wellness Projects Inc. In the past, has also volunteered with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority,  McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren, and House Blend Ministries.

Susan Yakabowich is passionate about generosity and longs to see a world where everyone lives generously. Having been at Abundance Canada for over four years, she works with clients in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan helping them develop generosity plans that they can use in their lifetime and in their estate. With previous experience in strategic planning, leadership, management, and business development, Susan brings many skills to her role. She has extensive volunteer experience serving on boards of organizations such as the Mary Mother of the Church, Sunflower Festival, Altona Immigration Settlement, Steinbach Professional Development Toastmasters, and has been involved with several economic development committees.

This presentation is eligible for 1 CFRE Credit.

CAGP is committed to providing a safe experience for all our delegates when attending a CAGP event.  We prioritize the health, safety and social well-being of all delegates, guests, sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and staff.  We continue to monitor guidance from Public Health for regulations and guidelines.  At this time, we require PROOF OF VACCINATION to attend CAGP in-person events.  This policy will be reviewed in June 2022.

Vaccination

  • All delegates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  “Fully vaccinated” means that a participant has received a full series of a vaccine that is authorized by Health Canada, or any combination of such vaccines, and that a minimum of 14 days have passed since they received their final COVID-19 vaccination. 
  • Upon request, all delegates must show event organizers proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  This proof must be in a form approved by a provincial Public Health authority. 
  • If a delegate is unable to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, they must show proof of medical exemption.  Acceptable proof of medical exemption varies by province.  Delegates are responsible for ensuring that their proof of medical exemption complies with Public Health requirements in the province where the event is being held.
