About our Session Speakers:

  Lorna Somers
  Assitant Vice-President, Development, McMaster University  

Lorna Somers is recognized internationally as a teacher/facilitator in the fields of Philanthropy, Higher Education and Institutional Advancement speaking at educational, charitable and arts organizations througout the world. As an accomplished practitioner, she is in her 32nd year at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. From the introduction of foundational programs like Annual and Planned Giving, and the establishment of Major and Principal Giving and Recognition and Stewardship, Somers also leads strategic planning, case and vision development. Campaign Director for two university-wide comprehensive campaigns, she has also led  targeted campaigns for the Museum of Art, Health Sciences, Endowment, Chairs and Scholarships and University Centre. Somers works closely with academic leadership and is leading McMaster’s new Brighter World Research Initiative. Somers and Dr. Frank Minton have written the definitive Canadian fundraising text, Planned Giving for Canadians.  She is the recipient of numerous international awards for excellence in teaching and leadership including the Friend of CAGP and CASE’s Frank Ashmore Award for leadership and teaching and the John Lippincott Award for International Leadership.
 

   Paul Nazareth
   Vice President, Education & Development, CAGP

Paul Nazareth is Vice President, Education & Development at the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and has 20 years’ experience in the philanthropic sector. Most recently VP at the charity CanadaHelps, Paul has been a philanthropic advisor in a national Wealth Management firm working with Donor Advised Funds and Foundations. He has worked with charities like the University of Toronto and the Catholic Archdiocese of Greater Toronto. Paul is on the board of several charities, is Chair of the Advisory Board at the Humber College postgraduate fundraising program, on the Advisory Council of the Carleton Masters in Nonprofit Leadership program, faculty for Advisor Education with Knowledge Bureau and has spoken with AFP Chapters in every Province. Paul writes on philanthropy for a variety of publications as well as appearing on national radio and television to speak about creating a personal legacy through charity.

 

   Bruce MacDonald
   President & CEO, Imagine Canada

When carnivals and social good combined, it pointed to a path and for 30 years Bruce has been walking that route. From working for organizations that provide services to young people, older adults, persons with disabilities, community service clubs and sports and recreation groups, Bruce's experiences have led him to Imagine Canada, where he is the President & Chief Executive Officer. Prior to that, he was the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada where he participated in a collective effort to bring mentoring programs to kids.  Bruce holds a Bachelor Degree in Sports Administration from Laurentian University, a Masters in Management in the Voluntary Sector from McGill University and a record in the Guinness Book of World Records. In early 2019, Bruce was appointed Co-Chair of the Permanent Advisory Committee on the Charitable Sector working with the federal government.

 

About our Luncheon Keynote Speaker:

   Dan Patterson
   President, Niagara College

Dan Patterson, PhD, has been Niagara College's president since 1995. Under his leadership, the College tripled its enrolment to over 13,000 full time students in over 130 programs. Dan also led the largest capital expansion in Niagara College history with over $300 million of campus redevelopment. He has successfully translated his unique standing as a community leader in Niagara to numerous Niagara College multi-million-dollar fundraising campaings including the Next Century, Future Ready, Building Futures, and Achieving Dreams campaigns. Most recently Dan has been working on a legacy fund campaign designed to raise funds for needs-based bursaries, merit-based scholarships and Be World Ready travel bursaries. 

Patterson received his BA from the University of Windsor, his MSc from The London School of Economics, and his MEd from the Unversity of Toronto. He later attended Oxford to complete its Senior Management Development as well as a Visiting Fellowship at Green Templeton College (Oxford University, U.K.). Committed to lifelong learning, he earned his PhD from the University of Toronto in the field of higher education. In recognition of his achievements within the college system, Dan was conferred an Honourary Doctorate from Niagara University (New York) in 2003 and an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from Brock University in 2009.
