Gift Planning Prospecting for Large and Small Shops

Presented By:

Jim Lawson CFRE, Associate Director of Gift Planning, University of Toronto

and

Erica Sum, Research Officer,University of Toronto.

Faced with a large spreadsheet of planned giving prospects, how do you refine those names down to the best individual prospects? Although planned giving prospects tend to ‘fly under the radar’ in many respects, they share some common behaviours and characteristics that can help reveal their planned giving propensity. Using a research model created at the University of Toronto we will discuss a variety of strategies we’ve used to identify the best gift planning prospects, including how to find and manage important information about them. Participants will be able tailor these strategies to their specific not-for-profits.

Jim Lawson

Jim Lawson has worked in U of T Advancement since 1999, the past five in U of T’s Gift Planning Office, where he is responsible for raising awareness of planned giving amongst U of T’s alumni and friends. Jim is responsible for several projects such as the University’s Gift Planning Newsletter and the Estate Planning Workbook, as well as managing a donor portfolio.  Since joining U of T’s GPO, Jim has worked with the Analytics and Research teams in developing models to identify high-probability GP prospects, providing donor pipelines for the university’s 28 divisions.  Prior to joining U of T Jim worked for the United Church of Canada for thirteen years, latterly as Director of their national Gift Planning Office in Toronto.

Erica Sum

Erica Sum is a Research Officer at the University of Toronto's Division of University Advancement. Prior to this, she was a volunteer researcher with Doctors Without Borders Canada. She has written and presented on prospect research with APRA Canada and CAGP.
