Fusion or Confusion: Blending the Major and Planned Gift Ask

Successful organizations provide donors with multiple opportunities to donate (multiple channels; multiple times). Donors sometimes get confused and burned out by uncoordinated and ‘competing’ solicitations for their support. One of the greatest challenges, and therefore opportunities, is examining how to ‘blend’ the major gift and planned gift ask.  In this session Guy will examine the concept of blended asking; the current models that exist that combine major and planned giving; the steps that can be taken to successfully integrate the two approaches; and the competing perspectives defining giving.

Guy is currently President/CEO of Global Philanthropic Canada. He has served as Vice-President of External Relations for SAIT Polytechnic (1999-2010) and Chief Development Officer for the University of Alberta (1995-1999), as well as senior fundraising positions at the Canadian Red Cross Society and cultural non-profit organizations. Since 1980 Guy has successfully led numerous fundraising campaigns, large and small, including the $190 million It Makes Sense campaign at the University of Alberta, and the $85 million Invest in Technology Campaign and the $75 million Promising Futures Campaign.

Guy serves on a number of boards and committees including the Carleton University Advisory Committee on Masters of Philanthropy and Non-Profit Leadership; and Petrus Inc. (USA). Guy has also served as a former member of the International Board of Directors for AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) and CFRE Professional Certification Board, member of the Board for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, past member of the Board of Directors for the Council for Advancement & Support of Education, District VIII, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Calgary Chamber for Voluntary Organizations.

Guy has taught Fundraising Management at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, is currently an Adjunct Professor for the Master in Fundraising program at the University of Bologna, Italy, is the current Vice-Chair of the Government of Alberta Charitable Advisory Committee. He has served as past Chair of the Board for both for the Alberta Science & Technology Foundation and WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Competition.

Guy has deep experience in the education sector and in multiple contexts, both as a senior practitioner and as a consultant. Organizations served include urban and regional universities, community colleges, independent schools and education-based not for profits.

Guy is a regular speaker and presenter on fund development and has presented keynote and workshop sessions at numerous international conferences in Canada and the United States, Europe, South Africa, and Australasia consulting nationally and internationally for a wide variety of institutions. Guy was recognized in 2009 by Alberta Venture Magazine as one of Alberta’s most influential citizens and by the Calgary Herald in 2009 as one of Calgary’s 20 most compelling citizens. Guy was awarded Outstanding Fundraising Executive by both AFP Edmonton Chapter (1999) and AFP Calgary Chapter (2011).

Guy has Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary and a Masters of Arts degree in Philanthropy and Development from Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota. He obtained his Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential in 1995.

Guy is Editor and author of the best-selling (Globe & Mail) book, Excellence in Fundraising in Canada; the professional assessment book The Fund Development Audit; and numerous articles and research papers.
